Alterme Home, making small steps towards more sustainable homewares

Recently there has been more and more publicity around fast fashion and ways that we can be more sustainable with our wardrobe choices, which got me thinking about the gap in the market for a homeware alternative…

“Overall, an estimated £2.2 billion worth of homeware items are being sent to landfill each year. The study surveyed 2,000 UK adults on their attitudes towards buying new homewares, as well as how often they dispose of old home décor items, and how they do this” - Circular online

Say hello to a sustainable way of shopping for your home…

Alterme Circular - Rent, Recycle, Repair & Repeat

I am very conscious of shopping sustainably for my wardrobe, wether that be buying second hand, repairing clothes or choosing to buy from more sustainable brands, but I couldn’t help but notice there was a gap when it came to interiors pieces! Soft furnishings in particular!

“25% of British people said that keeping up with homeware trends is important to them, however, they’re throwing away almost 70 million homeware items every year, according to a new study by Hammonds Furniture.” - source

“Almost one in ten people (9%) throw away unwanted furniture, cushions, lamps and more – amounting to 69.9 million items every year. The study also shows that despite Gen Z (18 -24 year olds) claiming to be sustainably minded, they‘re buying and throwing away items for their homes more frequently than other age groups.” - source

The textiles industry is one of the largest polluting industries in the world.

When we think of textiles, cushions, curtains, throws and table linens aren’t the first to mind, with fashion always being at the forefront. So in a bid to change this Alterme Home has started a new initiative, where you can rent table linens, recycle old cushions & curtains in exchange for store credit, send in cushion covers for repair OR swap an item you’ve previously purchased from us for a 50% off voucher to spend in store!

All items that we receive via the ‘Recycle’ scheme will be carefully taken apart to re use zips and/or inners and in some cases even re use the fabrics to make ‘sustainable capsule cushion collections’ thus helping reduce both our own waste & saving you, the customer, from adding unwanted items into landfill. Find out more here.

Where we are unable to re use and re purpose we will be donating to relevant charities such as clothing banks and animal shelters.

We know that you can already buy and sell pre loved homewares but hopefully by adding these additional steps on our website we can support a wider variety of recycling and with that there will also be a new ‘pre loved’ section where you can purchase any returned items from us once they have been cleaned and steamed at a heavily reduced rate!

We hope you will agree that this is a great new step for Alterme Home & encourage you to get involved in this new concept and take small steps with us to create a more sustainable home!
